6 Historic Tips for Choosing the Best Bedding for Infants and Toddlers

Does history have anything to do with the present? For many of us, history seems irrelevant. How can people and events have any influence on our present lives? Of course, to a certain degree we should live in the present. Tomorrow never comes and we can never revisit yesterday. However, we can better appreciate everyday objects, by understanding their development in the past.

For instance, baby beds have become an integral part of modern life. A wide array of cribs, basinets, Moses Baskets, and toddler beds are available on the market. Each model has various features that can benefit our particular child. In addition, a wide variety of beddings of various textures, colors, and patterns, are also available. However, we cannot fully appreciate today’s baby beds and beddings, without having a basic knowledge about the evolution of baby beds.

To understand the history of the bed, we must first understand various terms related to it. Technically, the term "bed" refers to the location where a human sleeps. The first "beds" were simply cavities in the ground. In fact, it would be more accurate to refer to the furniture on which we sleep, as a "bedstead." However, for convenience sake, we will refer to "bedsteads" and a moses basket stand, as simply "beds."

Humans began frequently to use bedrooms with beds, during the 1600s. During that era, virtually every room contained a bed, which doubled as a couch during the daytime. These first beds could become totally enclosed, which was useful to retain warmth. The beds oftentimes included bulky drapes or doors.

What was the first baby bed? That was a small rocking or swinging bed that people referred to as a cradle. Following the popularity of beds, tables, and chests, cradles once served as one of the most popular furniture pieces in homes. The first and most commonplace cradle was a rocker. However, this rocker was not a rocking chair. It was a half log that the manufacturer had hallowed out. One small step was attached to this early cradle.

In the Americas, a certain type of cradle became popular among the first colonists in the region. This included angled sides and a hood on one end. While the most basic version included pine boards that the manufacturer nailed together, more intricate styles included Art Nouveau or Gothic styles.

As impressive as today’s baby bags, was a variety of cradle that included a standing frame that held a suspended open container. Items such as chains, rope, or hooks connected the container to the frame. Craftsmen first produced this type of cradle towards the end of the 1400s. The box hung between two upright pieces that a flat frame supported.

A more complex version of this suspended cradle appears in a cabinetmaker’s Cabinet Dictionary, from the 1700s. A spring contraption maintained the cradle’s rocking for 1.5 hours. Today, motorized cradles use electric motors to perform this same function.

As fascinating as the development of children’s beds is, was the development of bedding for childhood beds. Today’s bedding is available in a wide variety of patterns, colors, and patterns. Here are some tips to select the best bedding for your child’s bed:

1. To lengthen the use of beddings, select more traditional patterns
You may want your child’s bedding to last longer than the current cartoon or movie craze. In that case, then you should select a pattern that will have a longer shelf life. That includes:

• cats
• fish
• flowers
• lizards
• stripes

2. Purchase extra sets of crib bedding
As with a toddler bedding set, it is advisable to have additional sets of crib bedding.  Infants tend to be somewhat messy during the first few years of their lives. You should also consider using a plastic mattress cover, so your crib mattress remains dry.

3. Look for ensembles
In the current soft economy, it is more important than ever to get value in our purchases. For instance, when selecting bedding for a toddler’s bed, consider ensembles that include items such as:

• bed skirt
• comforter
• pillowcases
• sheets
• throw pillows

You can find these ensembles in a variety of colorful patterns, such as movie and cartoon characters.

4. Search for bedding that is both soft and washable
The price of the bedding is less important than its function. Select a bedding fabric that is soft against the baby’s skin. This is important, to provide the greatest amount of comfort possible. Some examples include various types of cotton, such as woven cottons.

Another issue you should consider is how washable the beddings are. You should be able to machine wash each and every piece of a bedding set. As a practical matter, babies’ beddings, such as girl crib bedding, become too messy to wash by hand. Also, the fabrics should be easy to wash.

5. Mix and match your child’s beddings with other decor
If you want to "balance" lively children’s beddings, then consider using less decorative decor throughout the room. For instance, you could use window treatments of solid colors, which complement the colors of the beddings. The bottom line is that your child should like the color schemes of the room.

6. Select crib bedding that fits tightly
In particular, it is important that crib beddings fit snugly onto the mattress. In particular, ensure that each corner of the mattress is secure. To ensure that this is the case, you can attach elastic straps that you can clip to the sheet that is underneath the crib’s mattress. As a general rule avoid beddings and other objects in cribs, which are soft and loose. Such items could actually result in your child suffocating.

Throughout the years, beds and beddings have undergone a drastic development. Today’s "beds" drastically differ from those of the past. However, infants’ and toddlers’ beddings have become as practical as the most effective diaper tote. They still allow our children to have a night’s sleep that is one for the ages!
