Fine Watches Makes a Man

For a lot of women, the watch is merely another accessory. It is an additional match to all the other members of their wardrobe. But for men, it is a different story.

The gentleman’s watch is actually an accurate reflection of a man’s personality. Notice that men who are usually rich in accessories are often branded as metrosexual, or worse, gay. For most men, these labels pull down their manhood meter and therefore, most mens watches are simply the only accessories they wear.

Another reason why the watch mirrors a man’s personality is their reluctance to shop. Most men only own two to five watches. In fact, I know a lot of men who own only one everyday, day to night watch! Men, unlike women, are not easily lured by variety. Men are more practical. Hence, they spend shorter time when strolling on the mall and when they’re there for a long time, it’s because they’re doing intensive canvassing for a small time investment. That is why when they purchase a watch, they make sure it reflects their lifestyle and status, and the way they think about themselves with the little details that make up their individuality.

Lifestyle Check

Looking at a man’s watch, you can have an intelligent guess about their chosen lifestyles. First question: what material is the watch made of? The more heavy duty the material is, the more hectic the lifestyle of this man might be. If it is a sports watch, he might be more into outdoor sports or he might be into adventure. If it is a sleek silver wristwatch, he might be spending most of his time indoors, most probably in an office.

Of course, a lot of people can just say that a man can own more than one watch and he’s just wearing what is fit for his day’s schedule. At least when you see a man’s watch you’ll know what he will be doing for the rest of the day. And perhaps that’s enough to get through the day and start knowing him better.

Status Check

The watch is also one of the best candidates to pull off when trying to measure up a guy’s status. Aside from one’s car (of course, you can’t find out what car a man drives when you’ve just met him inside a room), the watch is the easiest tell. Is he into expensive classics like Rolex, Tag Heuer and Cartier? Most likely this man is earning hefty monthly paychecks. Does he own a scratchy digital watch with an unknown brand? Well, bless his soul!

Trivia: Did you know that the slang word “bling” came from a sound effect that movies use to depict the reflection of light that hits the face of a shiny watch?  Since then, the word “bling” is closely related to anything shiny, sparkling or luxurious, be it things as small as rings. or fine watches or even big yachts. Hence, the status connection.

Psychology  Check

Another important thing that you should note about the ability of watches to check out statuses is that a man’s watch MAY NOT ALWAYS tell of lifestyles accurately but more of their mindsets. A middle class man who owns an original Rolex, even if he saved up for that piece for ten years, gives us the impression that he thinks he deserves a Rolex, and therefore, he must not rest until he owns a piece. This mindset is something that the watch companies should watch out for. After all, even if their income may not match the ideal market for luxury or designer watches, their psychology is more powerful than demographics.

It’s easy to sell luxury watches to these kinds of people because they are bent on owning one anyway. And one who already thinks he deserves a luxury watch WILL EVENTUALLY OWN a luxury watch.

There’s also this story about an airline company CEO who enters a bank and was looked down by the tellers because he was wearing an old white Casio digital watch. He was supposed to withdraw a small amount of money and then the tellers weren’t paying that much attention to him. He was pissed and this led to him closing his multi-million account with that bank. He was wearing plain clothes but what the tellers remembered was his watch. They said they didn’t recognize him because he was wearing plain clothes and a “beaten up” watch. How humbling!

The aforementioned anecdote tells us about the market segment that is composed of people who actually can afford luxury watches but are not that attracted to the idea. Perhaps there is no pressure for them to prove their status anymore. To them, plain watches in working condition are fine.

Detail Check

Lastly, the details of the watch speak of how meticulous a man is. Does the watch come with a thermometer, a heartbeat counter, an mp3? These additional features are more accurate in the telling of a guy’s personality. A lot of watches today multi-task and since the market is neck-to-neck, the additional features sell these gents watches faster. How about the details on the side of the watch’s face? Does it contain little diamonds or etchings or a personalized symbol?

For years, we thought that men were very hard to read. Then there’s the over-rated gender difference which discourages women—half of the world, by the way—to get to know the male species more. Now, with a simple observatory action, the checking out of a watch, men can be read easier.

However, we do not advise that you immediately check out a man’s watch whenever you meet a new lad on the street. That will only make you look like a starry eyed gold digger! Wait until you get a closer look at the man’s wrist buddy. Remember to be subtle!
