An Introduction to Cornhole
Cornhole is a game which has become popular over the past couple decades originating in Cincinnati, it has spread to numerous cities throughout the United States. Some of the things which make the game of Cornhole popular are that it is very easy to set up and play with minimal amounts of equipment, and the rules are simple enough that anyone can easily understand them, making the game very accessible to all kinds of people. Lets take a look at what is involved in playing the game Cornhole, so you can get a sense of what it is all about and how you can get started playing it yourself.
The goal in the game of Cornhole is to throw a number of cornhole bags which are filled with corn or beans (small bean bags) into holes which are cut into raised wooden platforms. Usually one end of the platform will be raised. The platform will be little more than a simple plank of wood which has a small hole cut into one end and which has one end raised a few feet. Platforms are four feet by two feet in size and usually the platforms are decorated, either with the name of the game Cornhole or with the names of the teams who are playing the game.
The game of Cornhole is divided into innings, during which each player or each team that is in the game will have four bean bags (or corn bags) to throw at the holes. Different scores are received based on whether a bag falls into the hole or whether it falls onto the platform. If you get the bean bag to fall onto the platform then you generally receive the score for a Corn Bag In-The-Count, which is one point if you are playing to twenty one points, and more if you are playing the 104 point version of the game. If you manage to get your bag to fall into the hole in the platform, you receive a score of 3 points towards the twenty one point version of the game, or sixteen points if you are playing the 104 point version of the game.
There is also a rule in most versions of the game that any corn bag which touches the ground at any point in its trajectory is considered out of play and cannot contribute at all towards your score. So, for instance, if a corn bag bounces off of the ground before it touches the platform, then even if it is resting completely on the platform it will have to be removed from play. If the corn bag hits the platform first, but then slides down the incline to the point that it is at the bottom and partially supported by the ground, then that corn bag will also be taken out of play and will not contribute to the player’s score.
While playing the game, there will generally be two cornhole boards, and they will be set thirty feet apart. Players will stand at the same distance as the cornhole board which is opposite the one which they are throwing at. The play of the game will be divided into innings, and each inning will have an upper half and a lower half. During each half of the inning one of the given teams will throw all of their corn bags. Once each side has thrown all of their bags the inning is over, and the game goes on until one of the sides has been able to reach the target score of the game.
