Once you have finished your examination of the exterior follow cable into the house and check the wires for tampering that lead to each of your phone handsets.

The basic wiretaps are attachments that connect to the wires that lead to your telephones. You should thoroughly examine every telephone gadget in your home that is connected to your telephone lines.

When an amateur tap has been placed on your phone lines, it is usually simple to spot.  No matter what type of wiretap it is, you should not try to remove or even touch it or any other wiring you are not familiar with.

In the modern form of wiring, the blue is primary which carries the incoming and outgoing calls, orange is secondary, for additional phone is needed, green is tertiary and the brown is quad, with the green and brown being additional space that can be now used for more phone devices as will as Internet access.  In old school wiring the red and green wires are the primary and they are what carries the incoming and outgoing phone calls; and the yellow and black wires are the secondary wires, which offer the option of adding a second telephone device.

Parts used for wiretaps may include the use of computer processors, voice activated recorders and even some disguised as wall outlets or plugs. Any time you find unusual stripping of phone wires, it could be proof of a detached wiretap.

What should I do if I find that there is a wiretap on my phone?

If you ever find what you suspect to be a wiretap or any device associated with wiretapping, make sure that you do not touch any of the wires or devices as it can be hazardous.  Get your camera and take a few pictures of the offending material or damage, then call your telephone service provider and the police; they are better equipped and trained to deal with situations such as this.  If you have suspicions of who might have done this, do not attempt to confront them on your own, give the information to the police and let them take care of it.  The evidence of wiretap equipment is only one part of the equation, in order to prosecute someone for this type of crime, the police department or other law enforcement agency and Telephone Company will have to work jointly to prove the party guilty, so let them do their job.

What if I find no wiretap evidence, can my phone still be tapped?
